Eleven GCAS members and a guest had a grand time on February 22 sorting through FIVE bins of orphan sherds in the GCAS’s library and adjacent lab/workroom at the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site. We are contributing these unprovenienced items to the Back To The Earth garden project we’re jointly pursuing with the Imogen F. Wilson Education Foundation.
Project director Marilyn Markel began the group’s day with a fine educational overview of the types of Mimbres ceramics they would be sorting and a clear description of the purpose behind the project. At day’s end Marilyn concluded our group had sorted enough orphan potsherds for now (about 25-30 pounds!). Next, GCAS member Marianne the Librarianne will pull unprovenienced obsidian flakes and debitage (other stone flakes) from the GCAS collections for finishing touches at Marilyn’s direction.
Stay tuned for updates as our project advances and visit the interpretive garden in person. It’s located in the far-southeast section of IFWEF’s Mimbres Culture Heritage Site on the far side of IFWEF’s RV parking area.
